Glacier National Park tours from Bozeman

A two- or three-night side trip to Montana’s crown jewel—what to know before you go.

Glacier National Park is Montana’s other famous park—jagged peaks, turquoise lakes and the Going-to-the-Sun Road. It is a long way from Bozeman, so it pays to plan it as a two- or three-night side trip rather than a day trip. This guide covers how far it is, what changed for 2026, what guided tours in the Glacier area look like, and how to fit it around a stay with us in Belgrade.

Base yourself in Belgrade. Our homes in Belgrade are about 5 minutes from Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN). Travelling with a big group? The Entire Duplex sleeps up to 12. See places to stay near Bozeman airport.

How far is Glacier from Bozeman?

West Glacier, the park’s main west entrance, is about 330 miles from Bozeman—roughly five and a half hours of driving without stops. That makes a same-day round trip unrealistic for most people. The usual plan is to drive up, spend two or three nights in the Flathead Valley (Whitefish, Columbia Falls or Kalispell) or near the east side, then drive back to the Bozeman area for the rest of your trip.

A common loop for visitors flying into BZN: spend the first nights in Belgrade for Yellowstone day trips, hot springs and Big Sky, head north to Glacier for the middle of the trip, then come back to the Bozeman area before your flight home. Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) near Kalispell is another option if you want to fly into one airport and out of another—compare fares before you decide.

What’s different in 2026

  • No vehicle reservations. Glacier did not require vehicle reservations anywhere in the park in 2026. source
  • Logan Pass parking was time-limited. The park piloted three-hour timed parking at Logan Pass and a ticketed-only shuttle system in 2026. Check the NPS site for the 2027 rules before you go—these pilots can change from year to year. source
  • Entrance fee. A private vehicle pass is $35 for seven days ($25 in winter, Nov 1–Apr 30). The park does not accept cash. Non-US residents 16 and older pay an extra $100 per person unless they have an annual or America the Beautiful pass. source

Going-to-the-Sun Road: when it’s open

The Going-to-the-Sun Road crosses the park for about 50 miles and tops out at Logan Pass, 6,646 feet. The high alpine section usually opens in late June or early July, once plows clear the snow, and typically closes by the third Monday of October. In 2026 the full road opened to vehicles on June 22. source

Size limits matter if you are driving an RV or towing: vehicles and combinations longer than 21 feet or wider than 8 feet (including mirrors) are not allowed between Avalanche Campground and the Sun Point parking area, and vehicles over 10 feet tall may have trouble west of Logan Pass because of rock overhangs. source Our Bozeman–Yellowstone RV road trip guide has more on driving a rental RV in the parks.

Guided tours in Glacier Country

A guide takes care of parking, timing and route-finding, which matters on the busiest summer days. Two local outfits are worth a look:

The Glacier Guide (Whitefish, Columbia Falls & Kalispell)

The Glacier Guide runs private outings in Glacier Country: custom backcountry adventures, scenic drives and wildlife viewing, historic barn tours, photography classes and photo shoots, and sunset picnics and engagement sessions. It is a good fit for couples, photographers and families who want a private day rather than a big group. Read its cancellation terms before you pay: its site says a 10% booking fee is kept on all cancellations, with a 90% refund if you cancel within 72 hours of the meeting time and 50% within 48 hours.

Glacier Tourbase (100+ local tours in one place)

Glacier Tourbase is a booking site for more than 100 vetted tours, activities and rentals around Glacier and the Flathead Valley, with local reservation agents. Examples listed on its site include a guided Avalanche Lake day hike, Two Medicine Valley day hikes, Wild Horse Island kayak tours, half-day whitewater rafting, Flathead River and Glacier Park fly fishing, scenic flights, horseback rides, an e-bike shuttle on the Going-to-the-Sun Road and, in winter, guided snowmobile tours. Prices and availability change, so check the listing for your dates.

A simple 3-day Glacier side trip from Bozeman

  1. Day 1 – Drive north. Leave the Bozeman area early. Break up the drive with lunch on the way and arrive in the Flathead Valley by late afternoon.
  2. Day 2 – Going-to-the-Sun Road or a guided day. In summer, start early for Logan Pass, or book a guided hike or tour so someone else handles the logistics.
  3. Day 3 – Lake day and drive back. Spend the morning on a lake—a kayak or boat outing—then drive back to Belgrade for the next part of your trip.

If you only have a few days in Montana, Yellowstone is much closer: the North Entrance at Gardiner is far nearer to Belgrade than Glacier is. See our Yellowstone guide and where to stay near Yellowstone.

Tips before you go

  • Book early for July and August. Guided tours and rooms in the Flathead Valley fill up in peak season.
  • Bring a card, not cash, for park entrance.
  • Check road status the morning you drive. Snow can close the high section of the Going-to-the-Sun Road early or late in the season.
  • Carry bear spray on trails and know how to use it.
  • Plan for no signal in much of the park—download maps before you leave.
