Flying into Bozeman and picking up an RV is one of the easiest ways to do a Yellowstone road trip: the park’s North and West entrances are both within a few hours’ drive, and there is a rental base right next to the airport. Here is what you need to know about renting an RV in Bozeman, camping rules inside Yellowstone, and how to mix RV nights with a comfortable house at the start or end of your trip.

Base yourself in Belgrade. Our homes in Belgrade are about 5 minutes from Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN). Travelling with a big group? The Entire Duplex sleeps up to 12. See places to stay near Bozeman airport.

Renting an RV at Bozeman airport

Blacksford runs a Bozeman-area RV rental base at 20777 Frontage Rd, Suite 1, in Belgrade—about a mile (three minutes) from Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport. According to the company, it picks renters up free at BZN (text or call when you land), is open 8am–6pm daily, and runs its Bozeman season from mid-May to the end of September. source

Blacksford says its rentals come with unlimited mileage and generator use, and it rents Winnebago and Thor motorhomes plus camper vans with kitchens, showers, toilets and bedding, along with 24/7 support and an orientation for first-time RVers. source Compare floor plans with the park size limits below before you choose a rig.

Camping in Yellowstone in an RV: the rules that matter

  • Reserve early. Yellowstone has 11 campgrounds with more than 2,000 sites. Starting with the 2027 summer season, all campground reservations go through Recreation.gov and open on a rolling basis about six months ahead. source
  • No overnight parking outside campgrounds. Car camping or overnight parking in pullouts, parking areas or picnic areas is not allowed. source
  • Hookups are rare. Fishing Bridge RV Park is the only campground in the park with water, sewer and electric (50-amp) hookups, and it is for hard-sided vehicles only. NPS lists its 2027 dates as May 14–Oct 16 at $94 a night plus taxes, with a 95-foot vehicle maximum. source
  • Length limits vary by campground. NPS lists combined RV-plus-vehicle maximums for 2027 such as 60 ft at Bridge Bay and Madison, 50 ft at Grant Village, 40 ft at Canyon and 30 ft at Tower Fall (which has a hairpin curve). Pebble Creek remains closed after the 2022 floods. source
  • No RV delivery inside the park. Delivering or picking up rental RVs inside Yellowstone is prohibited, so you pick up and return in town. source
  • Dump stations may close when temperatures drop below freezing. source

A 6-day Bozeman–Yellowstone RV loop

  1. Day 1 – Land at BZN. Spend the first night in a house in Belgrade so you can shop for groceries and rest after the flight. See our groceries & essentials guide.
  2. Day 2 – Pick up the RV and head south. Take US-191 through the Gallatin Canyon past Big Sky to West Yellowstone.
  3. Day 3 – Old Faithful and the geyser basins. Camp in the park’s west or south side, with a reservation.
  4. Day 4 – Yellowstone Lake and Hayden Valley. Fishing Bridge is the hookup option here.
  5. Day 5 – Canyon and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, then north toward Mammoth and Gardiner.
  6. Day 6 – Paradise Valley back to Bozeman. Stop at Livingston or a hot spring, return the RV, and spend the last night in a real bed near the airport.

Thinking about Glacier too?

Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road does not allow vehicles or combinations longer than 21 feet or wider than 8 feet (including mirrors) between Avalanche Campground and Sun Point—most motorhomes are too big for that stretch. source See our Glacier tours guide for guided options and the park’s shuttle.

RV tips for southwest Montana

  • Allow extra time. Park roads are two-lane and wildlife jams are common; an RV moves slower than a car.
  • Fill up in town. Fuel, groceries and propane are easier and cheaper in Bozeman, Belgrade and West Yellowstone than inside the park.
  • Watch the weather. Snow is possible at high elevations in Yellowstone even in early summer and fall.
  • Keep food secure. Yellowstone is bear country—store food inside the hard-sided RV, never outside.
