From paved paths to waterfalls to the crest of the Bridger Range, these are our favourite trails—sorted roughly from easy to epic. Distances are round trip unless noted.

  • Carry bear spray on all Custer Gallatin trails.
  • Distances/elevation are ranges reported by the cited sources (AllTrails-type data varies).
  • Hyalite Canyon Road closes to vehicles April 1 – May 15; the main road is plowed (not sanded) to the Grotto Falls lot in winter.

Palisade Falls

Hyalite Canyon (East Fork)

Paved half-mile nature trail to a tall waterfall pouring over basalt cliffs; picnic tables and accessible vault toilet.

Season: Late May–Dec (vehicles); winter access on skis/snowshoes after Jan 1

Grotto Falls

Hyalite Canyon (Hyalite Creek TH, end of main road)

  • Elevation gain~280–290 ft

Gentle walk up Hyalite Creek to a pretty cascade—great with kids; in winter the area is an ice-climbing hub.

Season: Mid-May–March (road plowed to Grotto lot until Mar 31)

Classic 'waterfall trail' passing Grotto, Silken Skein and many more falls and on to the Hyalite Peak summit with big views.

College 'M' Trail

Bridger foothills (MT-86)

Bozeman's signature quick hike to the giant white 'M' with views over the Gallatin Valley.

Season: Year-round (icy in winter—traction recommended)

Drinking Horse Mountain

Forested switchback loop with valley and Bridger Range viewpoints—quieter than the M.

Sypes Canyon Trail

North Bridger foothills

  • Elevation gain~1,600–1,850 ft

Forest drainage climb to a popular overlook (~2 mi) and on to the Bridger Foothills Trail (~3.1 mi); the closest real mountain hike to Belgrade.

Season: Spring–fall (usable in winter with traction)

Lava Lake (Cascade Creek Trail)

Steady climb along Cascade Creek to a striking mountain lake—one of the area's most popular hikes (busy on weekends).

Short but steep climb to a rocky summit with a bird's-eye view down the Gallatin Canyon.

Well-built family trail in Big Sky to a lovely waterfall.

Beehive Basin

High alpine basin hike near Big Sky; managed jointly by BSCO and the Forest Service.

Sacagawea Peak (from Fairy Lake)

Pine Creek Falls
